Preparing for Your First Delivery Shift
Your first delivery shift can feel like a lot to organise. Use this checklist to prepare your moped, documents, battery and delivery essentials before you start.
1. Check your documents and requirements
Make sure you meet the applicable legal and platform requirements. Check that you have the appropriate licence and CBT where required, completed the Ride Today collection process, the documents required for your work and a clear understanding of the applicable insurance arrangements.
Having a moped does not automatically mean you meet every delivery platform or insurance requirement. Check your circumstances before starting work.
2. Inspect your moped
Before setting off, check the vehicle’s general condition. Pay attention to the tyres and brakes, lights and indicators, mirrors and controls, visible damage, battery charge and any warning lights. If you notice a safety-critical fault, don’t ride until you’ve obtained appropriate guidance.
3. Plan your battery
Estimate how far you’ll travel and allow for additional distance between deliveries. Check your battery level and confirm which battery arrangements are available to you. Selected vehicles may support battery swapping or additional batteries, depending on the agreed subscription. Don’t rely on maximum advertised range as a guarantee.
4. Prepare your delivery essentials
Depending on your platform and working arrangements, useful essentials may include:
- A charged phone and your delivery app login details.
- A suitable phone mount, if you use one.
- A suitable helmet and protective clothing.
- Secure delivery equipment appropriate for your work.
- A portable charger, where practical.
- Water and a small snack for longer shifts.
Make sure anything you carry is secure and doesn’t interfere with steering, balance or visibility.
5. Get comfortable with the moped
If this is your first time riding an electric moped, take time to understand the controls and handling before starting work. Practise in an appropriate, safe environment and don’t enter busy traffic until you’re confident and legally permitted to ride.
London roads can be busy and unpredictable. Stay alert, leave enough space and avoid rushing to meet delivery times.
6. Learn your delivery area
Familiarise yourself with the area where you plan to work. Consider traffic patterns and busy junctions, safe and lawful parking, access restrictions, battery needs and how you’ll get home at the end of your shift. Follow road signs, parking rules and your delivery platform’s instructions.
7. Know what to do if something goes wrong
If your moped develops a fault, stop somewhere safe. Don’t continue riding if the vehicle may be unsafe. Contact Ride Today and follow the applicable reporting process in your hire agreement. If you’re involved in an accident, follow relevant legal requirements and the incident procedures in your agreement.
8. Keep up with servicing
Servicing is included in the subscription arrangements, but you are responsible for booking and attending required appointments. Check your hire agreement for the applicable schedule and plan appointments around your working hours.
